Frequently Asked Questions
Will Medicare or Medicaid cover the costs of an assisted living residence?
Although licensed by the Ohio Department of Health, our assisted living residence does not participate in any state or federal assistance programs such as Medicaid or Medicare.
However, if an assisted living resident experiences a severe illness or accident that requires hospitalization and then rehabilitation at a skilled nursing facility, Medicare coverage will apply. Medicare coverage includes 100% for the first 20 days for skilled care and then 80% for the next 100 days of care in a licensed skilled facility, as long as the resident qualifies and meets the skilled criteria.
If a resident needs a skilled nursing service, it may be provided by an outside agency in the assisted living facility, as long as the facility can provide the daily balance of care the resident needs and meets the state mandated rule of 120 days of skilled service per year.
What type of therapy or specialized service does The KentRidge provide?
At The KentRidge, we offer physical, speech, and occupational therapy services during the week, provided by a trained physical therapist through Encore Rehabilitation Services. When accompanied by a physician’s orders, residents can receive therapy two to three days a week, with reimbursement by Medicare as an “in home” therapy under the “skilled service” category.
Does The KentRidge require a significant up-front deposit from the resident?
We are a private pay model, and typically require a deposit equal to half of the first month’s base rent before a resident can take possession of the apartment keys or move in any items. Unlike some facilities, however, we do not require a significant down payment that can be greater than $100,000.
Prospective residents must also undergo an assessment by one of our registered nurses before being approved for residency at The KentRidge. This ensures that their physical and psychosocial needs can be met. The assessment (which can be conducted either at The KentRidge or at the nursing home, skilled facility or hospital where the person currently resides) involves a checklist of physical and cognitive items. In general, a person must be able to at least weight-bear and pivot with the help of one person in order to be a resident of The KentRidge.
What medical services are available at The KentRidge?
While residents are free to use their own healthcare providers or therapists, The KentRidge has an in-house medical director who can serve as their primary care physician. A full range of services is available including:
- Podiatry services
- Audiologist services
- Vision care
- Dental care
The KentRidge also provides laboratory and x-ray service on-site. For residents requiring physical and occupational therapy, The KentRidge has an inhouse trained physical therapist on the premises during the week.
What services does The KentRidge provide for those requiring "special care?"
The KentRidge’s special care wing is a dedicated, protected, secured area for those residents with heightened physical and cognitive needs, supported by an increased caregiving staff ratio of one staff member for every six patients to ensure their safety and security.
Direct cueing and handson assistance is provided along with reorientation, direction and assistance consistent with individualized needs, while specialized activities, organized by a full-time activity coordinator, are a means for resident satisfaction and contentment. The special care wing includes specially designed living accommodations equipped with a state-of-the-art monitoring system, ensuring their safety while respecting their dignity.
The combination of a private personalized space, familiarity of surroundings and comforts within an appropriately controlled and secure environment provides an atmosphere of serene living with a reduction of anxiety.
What is the market trend for senior residential services?
The “Senior Housing News” recently listed four hot trends in senior housing:
- Supply will decrease. Demand will increase.
- Families are looking for a residence 5 to 10 miles from their home.
- Simpler designs in architecture with single-story buildings.
Green spaces are in: waterfalls, gardens and wellness centers.
What are other factors for families to choose a residence?
Most studies agree that location is the number one factor; however, food and amenities are also high on the list for both seniors and their families, with word-of-mouth from satisfied families the most effective advertising. Interestingly, in one recent study, “who is in charge and do they have experience?” was number one with the children of potential senior residents.
At The KentRidge, we pride ourselves on our services and amenities, from our delicious meals and diverse range of activities to our comfortable suites designed to accommodate the needs of our aging population. Our staff members bring with them a wealth of knowledge, experience and education in senior care, and are dedicated to The KentRidge’s mantra, “Where People Matter Most.”
What are the differences between independent living, assisted living, and memory care?
Assisted living affords seniors a greater level of assistance with activities of daily living so that independence and dignity are maintained in a friendly and caring environment. Memory care is a special neighborhood for residents suffering from Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related illnesses. Memory care offers safety, comfort and appropriate social interaction where each resident is cared for and treated with respect and compassion.
What distinguishes The KentRidge from other area communities?
The KentRidge offers senior care focused on dignity, respect and quality of life where residents can age in place. We also pride ourselves on wellness-minded programs highlighting the importance of social, mental and physical well-being. At The KentRidge, each apartment is designed with aging in mind for comfort and safety. Whether a resident of our assisted living or our memory care residence, each and every detail of the community, its amenities, and its programs are chosen to provide superior quality and comfort.
What does it cost to live at The KentRidge?
We understand that financial obligations are a large part of choosing a senior living community. At The KentRidge, each neighborhood offers a variety of customizable options and choices to best suit your budget. There are VA benefits available to certain Veterans and Surviving Spouses to assist in paying for your cost of living. Additionally, a portion of the rent may also be tax-deductible as a medical expense. You’ll find that the costs of living at The KentRidge are much more financially feasible when compared to living by yourself or in higher-needs communities. For more information, please call us at (330) 677-4040 or complete our online contact form to speak to a senior living counselor.
What exactly are the VA benefits and do you help file for them?

What activities and services are available?
At The KentRidge, we pride ourselves on our activity schedule, which offers a diverse program of activities and outings tailored to meet the interests of our residents. Will I have a curfew?
Residents are free to come and go as they please, with no set curfew times.
Can I smoke?
We are a completely smoke-free community to all employees, and have a designated location for the residents who reside in the community.
Can I drink alcohol?
Benjamin Franklin once said, “in wine there is wisdom, in beer there is freedom.” We believe in smartly exercising our independence with social hours, such as our wine and cheese tastings, and happy hours where we serve beer and wine, as well as non-alcoholic beverages. Residents are welcome to stock their fridge with whatever they like.
What are the visiting hours?
You are welcome to have visitors at the time most convenient for you and your guests. Visitors arriving before or after our regular business hours simply use our call system and one of our staff members will be there to escort them inside.
